A Day of Discovery: From Dinosaurs to Canyon Adventures
There’s nothing quite like the promise of a big day ahead to make breakfast feel a little more exciting—and that’s exactly how our day began. With the scent of toast, scrambled eggs, and fruit filling the air, our students eagerly gathered to fuel up for an unforgettable journey. Laughter and chatter bounced around the breakfast area, with energy levels high and spirits even higher.
Once we had eaten our fill, it was time for our first adventure of the day: a morning lesson on dinosaurs. The classroom quickly turned into a prehistoric playground of curiosity. Students were fascinated as they learned about different types of dinosaurs, their habitats, and the eras they lived in. A few budding paleontologists eagerly asked about fossils, extinction theories, and the difference between a Tyrannosaurus rex and a Velociraptor. It was a joy to watch their eyes light up with wonder as they connected what they were learning to the exciting field trip ahead.
After the lesson wrapped up, we boarded the bus for a two-hour ride to Horseshoe Canyon. Though long, the ride was full of energy—students chatted about dinosaurs, played games, and took in the changing landscapes through the bus windows. Once we arrived, the canyon did not disappoint. Towering cliffs, unique rock formations, and sweeping views made for an awe-inspiring sight. We settled in for lunch surrounded by nature’s grandeur, munching on sandwiches and snacks with dusty boots and wide eyes.
After lunch, it was time to explore. The canyon became our playground as students hiked the trails, discovered fascinating rock layers, and imagined what the land looked like millions of years ago. The sheer scale of the canyon and the thrill of exploring it up close made for an unforgettable experience. Some students took photos, others sketched in their notebooks, and everyone came away with a deeper appreciation for nature’s ancient history.
Next, it was back on the bus and off to the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller. If the morning’s dinosaur lesson sparked their interest, the museum completely ignited it. The museum’s towering skeletons, interactive exhibits, and fossil displays captivated every student. From the massive T. rex display to hands-on activities and ancient sea creatures, there was something new and exciting around every corner. It was a highlight for many, and the questions and curiosity continued to pour out well after we left.
With stomachs growling again, we made our way to a nearby park for dinner. While the burgers were grilling, students took to the field to play soccer, frisbee, and just enjoy some free time under the open sky. Dinner was excellent—nothing beats a fresh grilled burger after a long day of adventure. Sitting on picnic blankets and sharing stories from the day, it was clear that the trip had left a lasting impression.
As the sun began to set, we boarded the bus one final time and headed back. Tired but happy, students chatted quietly or dozed off, the day’s excitement settling into warm memories. It was a day of learning, discovery, and connection—a perfect blend of fun and education.
