Say Yes! to English, Adventure, and Improv
Today was another exciting and enriching day at Wynchemna. From the classroom to the climbing wall, and from the golf course to an unforgettable improv workshop, our students experienced a full day of language learning, physical activity, and cultural discovery.
We began the day with breakfast as usual, giving everyone the energy they needed for a busy schedule ahead. Afterward, students jumped into two engaging English lessons. The first focused on job interviews, where students practiced answering common questions, learned appropriate vocabulary, and even role-played interviews in small groups. It was a fantastic opportunity to build confidence and get comfortable with real-life English conversation.
The second lesson of the morning explored the theme of “news from the future.” Students got creative imagining futuristic headlines and reporting stories as if they were journalists from the year 2125. There were stories about flying bicycles, robot presidents, and even underwater cities! The activity helped build speaking and writing skills while also encouraging creativity and collaboration.
Lunchtime brought us back to the school cafeteria, where students had a delicious array of meal options to choose from: steak, tortellini, a Reuben sandwich, or selections from the always-popular buffet. It was a great time to relax, chat with friends, and recharge for the rest of the day.
In the early afternoon, we returned to the classroom for a third English lesson, where we followed up on the day’s themes and practiced new vocabulary through fun group activities.
Then, it was time for some physical adventure! We headed out for our second session of rock climbing, where students challenged themselves on different climbing walls, supported each other, and celebrated every achievement, big or small. Whether beginners or more experienced climbers, everyone pushed their limits and had a blast.
After climbing, we visited the driving range to try out golfing. For many students, it was their first time holding a golf club! With guidance and lots of laughter, they practiced their swings, shared tips, and cheered each other on. It was a relaxed, social way to enjoy the sunny Calgary afternoon.
In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious pasta and salad buffet at Boston Pizza, where the group shared stories from the day and continued practicing conversational English in a real-world setting.
But the highlight of the evening came after dinner, when we returned to the residence for a special workshop led by a guest from Loose Moose Theatre’s improv team. The session was full of laughter, movement, and risk-taking as students learned to embrace mistakes, think on their feet, and say “yes” to new ideas. Through improv games and group exercises, they discovered how play can be a powerful tool for learning English. The room was filled with smiles and positive energy—it was clear everyone had a great time.
As the day came to a close, we all felt a little more connected, a little more confident, and a lot more inspired. Here at Wynchemna, every day is an adventure, and today was one we won’t soon forget!
