A Day at Camp Wynchemna: Scripts, Sports, and Scavenger Hunts in Calgary

Today was another unforgettable day at Camp Wynchemna in Calgary, full of creativity, activity, and adventure. With the sun shining and spirits high, our campers kicked off their day with a mix of storytelling, sports, and a city-wide race they won’t soon forget.

The morning began with back-to-back classes, and first up was an exciting session all about writing movie scripts. Campers got to brainstorm their own original storylines, complete with heroes, plot twists, and dramatic endings. Some were action-packed thrillers, while others leaned into comedy or heartfelt drama. The room was full of imagination and laughter as students pitched their ideas and began bringing their mini-movies to life. We can already see a few future screenwriters in the making!

Next, it was time to get moving in our American Football class. Students learned the basics of the game — from how to throw a perfect spiral to running passing routes and understanding touchdowns. The class was filled with high energy and great teamwork. Even those who had never played before got into the spirit of the game, making it a fun and active way to round out the morning.

After lunch, we gathered again for a more reflective and creative session: Poetry Class. Students tapped into their emotions and imaginations to craft original poems. Whether it was a haiku about their favorite food or a free-verse poem about friendship, every piece shared was full of heart. A few brave campers even stood up to read their work aloud, earning big applause and a boost of confidence.

Then it was time for the big afternoon activity: The Great Race. Armed with maps, clues, and a great sense of direction (mostly), students set off in teams on a walking adventure through downtown Calgary. They visited well-known landmarks like Olympic Plaza, the Calgary Tower, and Prince’s Island Park, solving riddles and completing small challenges along the way. The weather was perfect, and everyone got their steps in while exploring the city from a new perspective.

As the day wound down, appetites were up — and dinner hit the spot. We dined at a delicious Indian buffet that featured warm naan, creamy butter chicken, spicy curries, and more. The food was a hit, and the students left the restaurant happy, full, and maybe just a little sleepy from all the walking and excitement.

Before calling it a night, we celebrated some well-earned achievements. Student of the Day went to Coline, who stood out for her creativity, teamwork, and positive attitude throughout the day. The winners of The Great Race received a fun and fitting prize: a deck of UNO cards to keep the friendly competition going. Second place received Canadian luggage tags, a great souvenir to mark their Wynchemna journey.

From movie-making to poetry, from football to city adventures, today had a little bit of everything. It was a day filled with stories, steps, and smiles — and we can’t wait to do it all again tomorrow!
