A smashing time adventuring in Alberta!
Our day at Wynchemna was a memorable and enriching experience that brought together learning, adventure, and cultural exchange. The day started with a hearty breakfast at SAIT, where students gathered together, excited and ready for the day ahead. The atmosphere was lively, filled with anticipation as students from various backgrounds mingled and shared their hopes for the day. The breakfast provided a perfect opportunity for students to fuel up and socialize, setting a positive tone for the adventure that awaited.
After breakfast, we headed out from SAIT and made our way to our first stop: Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. This historic site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a significant cultural landmark for the Blackfoot people. As we arrived, students were eager to learn about the indigenous history and traditions associated with the buffalo hunt. We learned about stories of the Blackfoot tribe’s way of life, their spiritual connection to the land, and the remarkable methods used in hunting buffalo from the cliffs. After exploring the walking trails, we enjoyed a picnic lunch of sandwiches amidst the stunning landscape, taking in the vast plains and learning about the significance of this site in Indigenous history.
Our next destination was Lundbreck Falls, a beautiful and popular natural attraction. The falls are known for their powerful water flow and scenic beauty. Here, students had the chance to experience the refreshing outdoors and enjoy some water fun. Many students eagerly took off their shoes and waded into the cool water at the bottom of the falls, splashing and swimming in the natural pools. It was a wonderful moment of relaxation and enjoyment, giving students a chance to connect with nature and each other. Before heading back on the bus, students indulged in some snacks, re-energizing themselves for the rest of the day’s adventures.
From Lundbreck Falls, we made a brief stop to explore Frank Slide, one of Canada's most famous rockslides. The site is both a natural wonder and a reminder of the power of nature. Students learned about the historical event that caused the slide in 1903, which buried part of the town of Frank beneath tons of rock. They explored the area, took photos, and reflected on the the local community. This stop provided a fascinating glimpse into natural geology and history.
Finally, we headed to Chain Lakes for a delightful picnic dinner. Students enjoyed sausages, salads, and a variety of snacks, sharing their favorite parts of the day and practicing their English in a relaxed setting. The lakes provided a peaceful backdrop as everyone relaxed and soaked in the natural beauty around them. The day concluded with a sense of achievement and camaraderie, as students and teachers alike appreciated the opportunities to learn outside the classroom, explore new places, and connect with each other.
Overall, our day at Wynchemna was a perfect blend of education, outdoor fun, and cultural appreciation. It was a day filled with new experiences, meaningful conversations, and lasting memories, all centered around the joy of learning and discovery.
