Climbing, Culture and Comedy

Today was another unforgettable day at Wynchemna!  From breakfast to bedtime, our students were immersed in exciting, hands-on experiences that helped them learn English in meaningful and memorable ways.

The day started with a cheerful breakfast in our usual breakfast rooms. Students gathered at their tables, chatting about themselves with the new students who arrived yesterday. This casual setting gave everyone a relaxed opportunity to practice speaking and listening while getting some food in them!

After breakfast, we dove into English lessons. The first was all about customer service;  a crucial skill for anyone visiting or living in Canada. Students practiced role-playing scenarios such as ordering food as well as taking food orders, handling money and writing up receipts. The second lesson focused on different countries and cultures. Students shared interesting facts about their own countries and learned about their classmates’ backgrounds, traditions, and celebrations. It was a great opportunity to explore global perspectives while practicing vocabulary and conversation skills. The third lesson was all about the Guinness world records and the last about surviving the winter months in Canada.

Lunch was served downstairs in the cafeteria, and as always, there were plenty of choices to please every palate. Options included fish, chicken, beef, rice, potatoes, and a colorful selection of vegetables. Sharing a meal together gave students more time to talk casually and bond with each other, often helping one another find the right English words to describe their dishes.

The afternoon was full of energy as we headed to the indoor rock climbing facility. For many students, it was their first time climbing, and they showed impressive bravery and teamwork. Encouragement echoed across the room and the students ability to work together was amazing.

Afterward, we cooled down with some board games back at the residence. Students played games like UNO, spoons, ping-pong, pool and even practiced playing piano which not only offered entertainment but also provided a fun way to practice English reading and turn-taking vocabulary.

Dinner at Boston Pizza was a highlight of the first lesson as we got to experience first hand. Sharing a meal in a  restaurant gave the students real-life experience of interacting with servers.

The evening ended on a creative note. We formed small groups to begin rehearsing for our big talent show  coming up. Some students practiced dance routines, others worked on songs or comedy sketches, others on magic tricks and even gymnastics.

By bedtime, everyone was happily tired, having learned new skills, built new friendships, and practiced their English in a wide range of real-world settings. It's days like these that remind us just how powerful and fun language learning can be when it's lived, not just studied.
