From Ice to Improv: A Day of Skating, Tents & Laughs at Wynchemna
Today at Wynchemna was another action-packed day, and we somehow managed to go from the classroom to the ice, from the campsite to the dinner table, and finally to one of our favourite comedy spots in Calgary!
We kicked things off with our routine of three amazing English lessons. Once the lessons were wrapped up, it was time to trade our textbooks for skates as we headed to the University of Calgary Olympic Oval for an afternoon on the ice.
For some students, stepping onto the ice was a little intimidating at first. There were a few cautious steps, a few wobbly moments, and plenty of “I’ve got this!” followed by an immediate search for something to hold onto. But the improvement was incredible! Students were genuinely getting better in real time, going from carefully shuffling around the rink to confidently skating across the ice. By the end, there were some seriously impressive skaters showing off their new skills!
After skating, we shifted gears and started preparing for our upcoming camping adventure. The teachers gave everyone a quick demonstration on how to properly set up a tent, and then it was the students’ turn to get hands-on. Each group received their tents and got to work figuring out poles, fabric, clips, and all the other mysterious pieces that somehow become a tent. Luckily, everyone survived the experience, and we're feeling much more prepared for the real thing!
After all that activity, we headed to Denny’s for dinner and some much-needed fuel. But the day wasn't over yet!
We finished the evening at Loose Moose Theatre, our favourite improv spot in Calgary. It was the perfect way to wind down, with plenty of ridiculous characters, unexpected moments, and huge laughs. After a busy day of learning, skating, camping preparation, and eating, everyone was more than happy to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
Another fantastic Wynchemna day in the books — and with camping just around the corner, we're definitely going to need the energy!
