Olympic Dreams and Comedy Scenes
A slightly later breakfast was just what everyone needed to kick off another exciting Saturday at Wynchemna ESL Camp! After fueling up for the day, students headed into their first two English lessons, where creativity was on full display.
Throughout the morning, students became journalists by writing their own news stories, travel experts by designing colourful brochures showcasing beautiful Banff, and ambitious entrepreneurs by pitching creative products in a lively Dragon's Den competition. There were some fantastic ideas, convincing sales pitches, and plenty of laughs as students tried to win over their classmates with confidence and creativity. It's amazing to see how much everyone's English skills continue to grow each day!
After a fun-filled morning, we headed to the University of Calgary for lunch, where we were greeted once again by our favourite cafeteria servers. With everyone well-fed, it was time for one of the most unique activities of the summer.
We visited the famous Olympic Oval, home of the speed skating events during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics! Students laced up their skates and glided onto the same world-class ice where Olympic athletes once chased gold medals. Some students were skating for the very first time, while others showed off their growing confidence, but everyone encouraged one another and celebrated every lap around the track.
Stepping outside after skating was quite the change! The warm sunshine was waiting for us, along with an unexpected surprise from our camp director—ice-cold slushies for everyone! There were plenty of smiles as students cooled off with their colourful frozen treats before heading back to campus.
Back at SAIT, we wrapped up our final English lesson before turning our attention to the upcoming Wynchemna Talent Show. Classrooms quickly transformed into rehearsal spaces as singers practiced their songs, dancers perfected their routines, comedians fine-tuned their jokes, and groups worked together to prepare for what promises to be an unforgettable show.
To finish off an incredible Saturday, we enjoyed dinner together at Denny's before heading to the Loose Moose Theatre for an evening of hilarious improv comedy. Students watched talented performers create funny scenes completely on the spot, cheered for their favourite characters, and voted for the funniest performers of the night. The theatre echoed with laughter from beginning to end!
With a later Saturday bedtime, everyone headed off to sleep with big smiles, unforgettable memories, and excitement for another adventure waiting just around the corner. At Wynchemna, every day brings something new—and we can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store!
